Tyrannosaurus Rex Overhang

  1. Great to see pics of the Waimea boulders.
I climbed quite a few of the routes there about 11-14 years ago, on a visit with my wife, who grew up on Oahu. Either my first or second visit was my strongest; later trips went to Mokuleia, but other years even the same fall season the beach conditions were very different. One year the sand was gone, leaving flat slab landing under the T Rex roof - didn't even think about it. Last visit, the winter waves were already in and they chased everyone off the beach.
Recall doing something like the Left Arete, and the main T Rex roof, but vaguely remembered pulling on the right pocket, then reaching up left for a thin edge in the seam. Whatever I did, once I committed I felt like I had to finish, because I really didn't want to fall from there!
Now, as a certified old geezer I wonder if I could even reach the lip. I felt like a real superhaole then, only crazy dude climbing rocks on a perfectly good beach. Nowadays, I might even find a crowd!

    1. Hi Eric,

I literally just saw the comment you wrote on my Waimea Bay Bouldering blog back in late-2011. Thank you for sharing that story; made my night. I'm in the process of creating a new website that covers a few more of the spots over here: boulderinghawaii.com.

Waimea is included in there. Check it out :).

The climbing community has developed nicely over here. We're finding lot of rock (more than I ever thought could exist here), and even bolting some new sport near Mokuleia.

Do you possibly have any pictures of the climbing you did back here way back when? Would love to share it on the website and out Instagram. Thank you again.

      Cheers!

      Matt
